Introduction
This workshop will consider three inter-linked global challenges that are of particular concern to Asia. Asian countries have been in the forefront of efforts to help identify and mitigate global climate change, yet are also counted among the major contributors to that phenomenon. Disaster management has become something of an Asian specialty, given this region’s long experience with violent nature, yet natural disasters here are far from being fully managed. Urbanization in Asia has been burgeoning, for good and ill, and sustaining a high quality of urban life is intimately linked to the health of the natural environment. All of these challenges are also taking place in a social and political space where public awareness has never been higher, yet avenues for public engagement and action are often unclear.

The workshop places emphasis on discussions of how new models and advanced methods can be used for giving better insights on travel behaviors in transportation networks particularly in view of the recent concern of sustainability in transport networks. The workshop will bring together experts in a behavior side, a transportation network side, and a sustainability side worldwide to discuss both recent research and future directions in this important field. Theoretical and empirical papers covering these important aspects of behavior in networks to enhance the realism of modeling sustainability in transport networks would be presented.

Organised by the School of Energy and Environment, City University of Hong Kong, this Workshop, a prelude to the 2011 Asia Pacific Coasts Conference here in Hong Kong, will give an up-to-date technology and country status account of marine energy research and installations in the SE Asia region. Marine Energy Technology progress will be reviewed in terms of worldwide developments and the challenges for the industry's commercialisation. The scope for collaborative projects, research & development, demonstration and deployment and the career potential will all be discussed. The topics will be presented by leading regional & international practitioners and researchers.

This is a region of long coastlines and strong marine energy resource but also where energy supply must meet expanding development needs. It is also where the focus on clean and sustainable energy generation is the target for low-carbon communities.

The Ecologic Institute contributes to the ongoing European Union agenda to measure societal welfare and well-being in a more robust and inclusive way through two projects. The IN STREAM (http://www.in-stream.eu) project links economic indicators with measures of sustainability and well-being. The project seeks to assist policy makers by improving the EU’s ability to measure progress toward economic and sustainability goals. Second, OPEN:EU (http://www.oneplaneteconomynetwork.org) is a two-year collaborative research project exploring the question of how the EU can become a One Planet Economy by 2050.
