Welcome to ECSEE2013 - an IAFOR event
The International Academic Forum in conjunction with its global partners is proud to announce the Inaugural European Conference on Sustainability, Energy and the Environment, to be held from July 4-7 2013, at the Thistle Hotel, Brighton, England.

http://ecsee.iafor.org/

CONFERENCE THEME: "Sustainability, Society and the Environment: Searching for Synergies"

Sustainability has emerged as the most important global issue for business, industry, government, and academia, and yet to begin with sustainability was associated only with environmental concerns such as energy and global warming. It is now recognized that the concept of sustainability is applicable to all areas of human society, for example in terms of social/economic justice, or responsible business practice. Issues such as poverty, hunger, education, health care, and access to markets should be a part of the evolution of any comprehensive sustainability paradigm as we work together to achieve a sustainable future. ECSEE 2013 will address these various dimensions of human sustainability as we invite scholars from around the world to address questions and search for synergies and solutions to the complex issues surrounding sustainability in a forum encouraging serious and thoughtful exchange between academics, members of the global business community, and practitioners in the fields of human endeavor that link these. We call on scientists from around the globe to meet and share our respective outlooks and collective wisdom on a critical issue of common concern: the pursuit of a sustainable world.

Special Theme: "Sustainability, Society and the Environment: Searching for Synergies"

The conference theme is "Sustainability, Society and the Environment: Searching for Synergies" and the organizers encourage submissions that approach this theme from a variety of perspectives. However, the submission of other topics for consideration is welcome and we also encourage sessions within and across a variety of disciplines and fields related to Sustainability, Energy and the Environment, including the following streams:

Environmental Sustainability & Human Consumption: Food and Water, Hunger and Thirst
Environmental Sustainability & Human Consumption: Waste
Environmental Sustainability & Environmental Management: Freshwater, Oceans and Seas
Environmental Sustainability & Environmental Management: Land Use & Misuse

Environmental Sustainability & Environmental Management: Atmosphere and Air

Cultural Sustainability: Protecting, Preserving and Conserving

Economic Sustainability: Environmental Challenges and Economic Growth
Economic Sustainability: Sustainable Businesses and CSR

Social Sustainability & Social Justice
Social Sustainability, War and Peace
Social Sustainability & Sustainable Living

Energy: Environmental Degradation
Energy: Renewable Energy and Environmental Solutions

We will be building on the successes of previous events to make this the must attend event for the water and environment sector.

Call for ideas and offered papers
What topics would you like to see covered?
The aim of the conference is to challenge and inspire the water and environment community by sharing knowledge, networking and best practice, which is at the heart of meeting key global challenges.
We are seeking ideas and offers of papers on topics including (but not exclusively):
  • Water management - water resources, water quality, wastewater management, integrated water resource management
  • Flooding, urban drainage, surface water management, and the integration of water and flood management
  • Environment sector policy, legislation and regulation, the political process, influencing Government "direction"
  • Case Studies - European/International - global exemplars of brilliant and inspiring practice
  • The environment sector in times of austerity, investment and innovation; the opportunities and challenges of greening the economy
  • Integration and partnership working
  • Climate change and sustainability; mitigation and adaptation, global water security and interactions with energy, food and carbon
  • Valuing the environment and ecosystem goods and services
This conference is looking for speakers to inspire and demonstrate ideas andinnovations that will enable us to achieve a greener and more sustainable future. As noted above the programme will be made up of offered and invited speakers.
Please pass your ideas and speaker proposals to Lauren Goozee, Events Officer, CIWEM.
We will be putting the programme together from mid-October.

Events: Asia Water Week 2013 by ADB in Manila, Philippines (13-15 March 2013)

Asia Water Week 2013

On this page:
  • Background
  • Objectives
  • Thematic areas
  • Call for abstracts
  • Side meetings and workshops
  • Registration

Background

ADB is organizing Asia Water Week 2013 to deepen and expand analytical work in Asia’s water sector to advance inclusive policy reforms and strengthen support to priority programs and projects. The analytical work will provide the basis for sustained public investment and increased mobilization of private sector investment and expertise.
Asia Water Week 2013 has for its overarching theme "Securing Water for All". The conference will cover crosscutting topics such as climate change, water-food-energy nexus, and disaster management as well as sub-sector specific discussions, including water supply and sanitation, water resources and environment, and agriculture and irrigation. The ADB Water Prize 2013 award will also be presented.

Objectives

The conference will enable participants, including clients, ADB staff and invited specialists, to exchange knowledge on water sector issues, technologies, and to identify clients’ emerging priorities. New water sector initiatives will be announced, water sector professionals and leaders recognized, and innovations in the water sector encouraged.

Thematic areas

Aspects of water security will be examined through three thematic areas:
Basin Water Management - involvesriver basin institutions, capacity development, benchmarking, and stakeholder participation processes. Asia Water Week will provide a forum for exchanging knowledge and experiences in improving the planning, conservation, development, and management of water, forest, land, and aquatic resources in the context of increasing water security in river basins.
Urban Water Services - includeswater supply and sanitation, wastewater management, and flood risk management. Asia Water Week will focus on the key challenges facing the sector in the provision of water supply, sanitation and wastewater management services. Urban flood management, a perennial and growing problem, also needs to be addressed.
Rural Water Services - encompass irrigation, drainage, flood management, and water supply and sanitation services to rural communities. Asia Water Week will discuss ways to revitalize irrigation services to support market-oriented and diversified farms and to increase access to water supply and improved sanitation services for healthy and vibrant rural communities.

Call for abstracts

Asia Water Week 2013 welcomes abstracts for papers and poster sessions from water sector professionals, government policy makers, civil society, academics, development partners, and other individual stakeholders and organizations. Abstracts should address the conference thematic areas.
Abstracts for papers and poster sessions that share innovative ideas and experience relevant to improving water security in Asia and the Pacific region and those that address technological innovations and application of advanced tools and techniques relevant to one or more of the three themes are particularly encouraged. Abstracts of case studies on financing of water sector investments and sustainable operations, including stakeholder participation and/or public private partnership models in each of the three themes are also welcome.
Abstracts must be written in English and should be no more than 500 words. Deadline for submission of abstracts has been extended until Friday, 23 November 2012. Deadline of full papers for accepted abstracts is on 1 February 2013.

Side meetings and workshops

Pre-conference side meetings and special water sector workshops will be held on 11-12 March (Monday-Tuesday). Smaller focus group discussions on water sector topics may also be hosted during the conference’s parallel sessions on 14 March (Day 2).
Proposals for side meetings and workshops in the form of "concept notes" are welcome. Concept notes describing proposed sessions should include
  1. title and objectives of session;
  2. information on lead organizer and co-organizers;
  3. number of participants expected;
  4. format of workshop sessions; and
  5. proposals for financing of participants, resource speakers.
Concept notes should be sent to: Ian W. Makin before 1 December 2012. ADB will confirm acceptance of proposed events before 21 December 2012.

Registration

The conference is open to representatives of ADB members, development partners, academe, research organizations, NGO/CSO representatives, private sector partners and the media.
General registration will open on 1 December 2012. There is no registration fee; however only registered participants will be able to join the sessions.
